In a world filled
with noise,
Amena has become aware how increasingly difficult it is to separate the voices of others from one’s own. Society is in a constant state of consumption, internalising others’ thoughts, experiences and cultures. Her works explore the question, ‘How are we to distinguish who we are amid the chaos of these conflicting narratives?’
For this reason, Amena’s work is intentionally subdued and monochromatic. She restricts the colour palette to avoid distracting from the intention of the works. This keeps the conversation between her and the viewer open.
About the
Collection
She uses recognisable but abstract gestural markings to connect elements on the surface. Void of literary meaning, these asemic writings suggest an independent personal language. This creates a sense of familiarity and commonality between her and the viewer.
